The Employment Process

General Information

Thank you for your interest in a position with Lighthouse Voc-Ed Center, a unique and progressive private special education school. All certified positions require Connecticut certification or eligibility for certification. Click here for certification details.

The Application Process

Certified Positions:

Individuals seeking employment must submit a completed online application, which must include a cover letter, resume, at least three references, transcripts, (copies are acceptable), an essay, and evidence of certification. All materials must be received on-line by the advertised closing date (if applicable). Once all materials are received, you are considered a candidate for employment. It is your responsibility to ensure that all materials are received in a timely manner.

Non-Certified Positions:

Individuals seeking employment must submit a completed online application, which must include a cover letter, resume and at least three references. All materials must be received on-line by the advertised closing date (if applicable). Once all materials are received, you are considered a candidate for employment. It is your responsibility to ensure that materials are received in a timely manner.

Screening

All applications are reviewed to determine the most suitable candidates for current vacancies. If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted by email or you will receive a telephone call. If you are not selected, you will be notified by email or you will receive a letter. Depending on the number of applications, interviews may take place starting immediately after the closing date or, in some cases, at a future date.

Interviews

A screening team consisting of at least two members conducts all interviews. All candidates are asked the same questions or are asked to participate in the same activities. Interviews may be held at the school where the vacancy exists or at the Central Office.

After the interview, the screening team decides which candidates will continue as finalists in the process. All candidates who have been interviewed will receive an email or a telephone call, informing them of their status, as soon as the decisions are made. A second interview may be required.

Appointment to a Position

Once the decision is made to offer a position to a candidate, all finalists will be notified of their status. Appointment to a position is made after a candidate has verbally accepted an offer. Once the candidate has accepted, an initial orientation meeting is scheduled.

Pre-Employment Requirements

New employees are required by state law to submit two sets of fingerprints for a background check. The fee for this investigation is $69.25 and is the responsibility of Lighthouse Voc-Ed Center. Fingerprint cards are usually available at Central Office and in many cases, at your local police department. Fingerprinting must be completed prior to starting work, although the employee may begin work before the results are received by the school.

Employees are required to have a current vaccination for Tetanus. New employees who cannot provide proof of current vaccination will be required to receive the vaccination prior to starting work. Human Resources will arrange an appointment at Charter Oak Walk-In Medical Center in East Lyme, and the vaccine will be provided at no cost to the new employee.

Lighthouse Voc-Ed Center is an Equal Opportunity Employer and welcomes candidates of all backgrounds without regard to age, race/color, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability, religion or sexual orientation.
